xdg-open

xdgopen is a Linux command used to open files in preferred applications, http, ftp URLs from the Terminal.

To browse a Wikipedia.org you can use the xdg command as follows and it will open the site in Mozilla Firefox

$ xdg-open http://wikipedia.org

To open a document (open office) , we can use

$ xdg-open mydoc.odt 

and it will open the file in Open office.
